Thomas Throwing Sand in the Air at Dusk in Stanford

Thomas Throwing Sand in the Air at Dusk in Stanford

Most evenings we would go for a walk with the dogs before dinner. The kids usually went barefoot, in fact they rarely wore shoes in those days. Here Thomas is throwing sand in the air, collected from a little mound made by a harmless species of snake that liked to burrow in the ground.
This photo was taken close to where we lived in Stanford. A beautiful little town between Hermanus and Gansbaai. The town was a curious mix of people. Mostly Afrikaans speaking with a blend of arty English speakers from Cape Town and beyond. By South African standards it was a safe place. The windows to the house did not have burglar bars and we usually slept with the windows open. Something you would never do in most other parts of the country. Not unless you wanted to wake up dead.
